STATESBORO, Ga. — South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the departure of assistant coach Jorge Gonzalez, who has served at various levels within the club’s coaching staff since 2017. Gonzalez departs South Georgia for Major League Soccer’s Columbus Crew SC.
“Jorge has been the embodiment of what the club has tried to achieve both in the community and on the field,” Tormenta FC Head Coach & Technical Director Ian Cameron said. “Few staff members have been more integrated within the Statesboro community than Jorge. He’s present in our academy, with local business, local faith organizations and in the greater community. His departure will be felt by our guys who have benefited greatly from his expertise, but as deeply, too, by our fan base. He’s elevated our club, and we now get to watch him help elevate another club and community.”
Gonzalez served as an assistant coach for the club’s USL League Two team from 2017-18, helping the team to a 18-3-7 (W-L-D) overall record during that time and also helping the team claim the league’s Deep South Division title in 2018.
In 2019, Gonzalez joined the club’s professional coaching staff and has continued to help the growth and development of numerous professional athletes since then. His innovative training methods and strategic insights have elevated Tormenta FC’s performance on the field, demonstrated by the club’s first-ever professional USL League One title in 2022.
In addition, Gonzalez has been an important leader within TFC Academy, helping train and teach the next generation of athletes not only in Statesboro, Georgia, but across the region.
Under Gonzalez’s guidance, the club has achieved unprecedented levels of excellence in sports performance, fitness, and player development. His commitment, tireless work ethic, and coaching skills have left an indelible mark on the club and the community. Tormenta FC would like to express its gratitude to Gonzalez for his dedication and contributions to the club’s success. His professionalism and leadership have not only shaped the careers of our athletes but have also enriched the club’s culture.
Founded in 2015, Tormenta FC is a professional soccer club based in Statesboro, Georgia. Tormenta FC competes in the professional USL League One and the pre-professional USL W League, under the United Soccer League (USL), and has also established a thriving academy system throughout South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina. In addition, Tormenta FC is also constructing a new state-of-the-art 5,300-seat soccer-specific stadium in Statesboro.
