Statesboro, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC is excited to announce the return of midfielder Smith Cathey. She will rejoin the club this summer after another impressive collegiate season with the Georgia Southern Eagles. Cathey expressed her excitement about getting back to work for the club.
“Being able to rejoin a club like Tormenta means a lot to me as a player as they do everything in their power to ensure we succeed. I can’t wait to have the opportunity to play with girls from all over the world again and have a successful season,” Cathey said.
Cathey had her strongest season with the Eagles this past fall, notching a career-high seven goals, which placed her second on the team and fifth in the Sun Belt Conference. One of those goals was the game-winner against Miami, leading Georgia Southern to its first win over an ACC opponent since 1995.
Cathey and the Eagles’ record-breaking season ended when they lost to the eventual winner of the Sun Belt Conference, Old Dominion Monarchs, in the semifinals.
“We are glad that Smith will be playing with Tormenta FC again this summer. Her season was cut short last year due to injury, and that left a huge void in midfield for us that we just couldn’t replace. Smith is such a composed player, and we will need her playmaking and goal-scoring abilities at the top of the midfield. We expect her to play a big role and be a key contributor on the attacking side of the ball to help us achieve our stated goals.”
