STATESBORO, Ga. — South Georgia Tormenta FC’s USL W League faces the visiting SC United Bantams this Sunday, July 10, at Erk Russell Park at 7:30 p.m. ET. In the final game of the inaugural W League season, Tormenta FC can clinch the South Central Division title and secure a spot in the W League Playoffs with a win on Sunday night.
The last time both teams met, both were the protagonists in a five-goal thriller, and South Georgia’s Amy Andrews scored the game-winning goal in the final minutes of the encounter. However, SC United Bantams got the point at Erk Russell Park in the season opener against Tormenta FC in a 0-0 draw.
Last Tuesday, Tormenta FC added its sixth victory this season, defeating Peachtree City MOBA 2-0. Amy Andrews led the team to victory with two goals. Andrews leads the W League in total goals scored with fourteen and looks to solidify herself as the top goalscorer of the league come Sunday.
SC United Bantams are coming from a loss at home to the Chattanooga Lady Red Wolves after being defeated 1-2. With that result, the Bantams were officially eliminated from the division title race.
WHAT’S GOING ON AROUND THE LEAGUE:
The race continues to eliminate potential division winners. With four defeats in four games, SC United Bantams have no possibility of clinching the division title. However, a win on Sunday sees them end the season in third place.
The Lady Red Wolves are contenders to represent the South Central Division in the W League Playoffs. With a win on Friday at the Bantams, the Lady Red Wolves are now in first place, with South Georgia directly below them with a point less. The Lady Red Wolves would clinch the division if South Georgia cannot win its final fixture on Sunday.
South Georgia holds its playoff opportunities in its own hands. If Tormenta FC wins its final game of the season, a playoff spot and the division title will be secured.
In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named a founding member of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. For two decades between 1995 and 2015, the W League saw some of the biggest names past and present in the sport compete on the field, and this new era will build on the legacy of its predecessor. In alignment with the USL League Two season, the W League will kick off in May and end with the W League Playoffs and W League Final in late July.
