STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the signing of midfielder Chris Heckenberg to its 2022 USL League One roster on a one-year deal with an option, pending league and federation approval.
The former Tormenta FC 2 midfielder trained with the club’s League One side for preseason in February 2022 before solidifying his first professional contract.
“Chris is a guy who left a great impression on the organization last summer with his performances in USL League Two,” TFC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “Tom Morris identified Chris and projected he could be a future option for USL League One. We tracked him in his final semester in college and were eager to bring him in for pre-season games.”
“This process has proved really fruitful as over the course of the last 3 weeks his consistency in performance and ground coverage in midfield has allowed us to operate in certain ways the staff like. He also has a temperament that suits our group, and we’re excited for him to start his professional career with our organization.”
Heckenberg played an important role in TFC 2’s 2021 season, where he helped the team achieve its third League Two playoff appearance and second playoff run under Head Coach Tom Morris.
“It’s really exciting for me to sign my first professional contract,” Heckenberg stated. “It’s something that every kid grows up dreaming of so for me to be here now feels almost surreal. I can’t wait to get to work.”
The 2021 graduate played four years with California Baptist University and served as team captain for his final two seaons. His senior year, Heckenberg led the team to a 11-4-3 winning record and finished his collegiate career with one goal and 14 assists in 85 matches played. The midfielder also earned numerous accolades during his final two seasons at CBU including Most Valuable Player, All-WAC Honorable Mention and All-Far West Region Second Team.
Heckenberg joins an impressive roster ahead of Tormenta FC’s home opener on April 2 versus North Carolina FC.
