STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced the signing of winger Jamil Roberts to its 2022 USL League One roster on a one-year contract with an option, pending league and federation approval.
A native of Langport, England, Roberts was selected 77th overall by Sporting Kansas City in the 2021 Major League Soccer SuperDraft. The 23-year-old was then signed by Sporting Kansas City II in the USL Championship, where he appeared in 15 games, netting two goals and an assist.
“During the past few weeks of preseason, the staff identified areas of the field we believe need better balance. Jamil not only fits one of those roles really well, but he’s the type of player that will make guys around him better with his work ethic and movement off the ball.”
Ian Cameron, Tormenta FC Head Coach
“The group of boys we have in our squad are already enjoyable to coach and are starting to grow off the field in a nice, united way,” Cameron added. “In getting to know Jamil in the last few weeks, we anticipate he will not only fit in, but he also has the capacity to make us an even better group away from the field with his infectious personality.”
Collegiately, the winger played in 72 matches with 62 starts for Marshall University, finishing top ten in the program for all-time assists, goals and points. Roberts is also credited with 10 game-winners during his time with the Herd.
In May 2021, Roberts stamped his name into the Marshall Men’s Soccer record books by scoring the game-winning goal that helped his program win its first-ever NCAA College Cup national championship.
“From the moment I spoke to the gaffer, I knew this club was the right fit for me,” Roberts said. “I will always work as hard as I can for the club and the fans, and hopefully, we can achieve great things together this year.”
The Englishman is a product of Plymouth Argyle FC Academy, where he gained youth experience before moving to the United States to attend Marshall University.
Roberts joins a growing and impressive 2022 roster along with recent signings of Alex Morrell, Chris Heckenberg and Kazaiah Sterling. Additional player announcements, kit reveals and more are expected soon, so fans should download the Tormenta FC app or follow the club on social media to stay up to date.
