STATESBORO, Ga – April 19, 2024— South Georgia Tormenta FC is back at home for its first Sunday match of the season as the team hosts Greenville Triumph SC in the first Peach States Derby match of the 2024 season. With a win, South Georgia will potentially finish week seven at the top of the USL League One table.
Recipe Review
Tormenta FC returns to USL League One play following a 2-4 win in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup over USL Championship side Miami FC. During Wednesday’s victory, South Georgia’s Jake Dengler, Conor Doyle, Callum Stretch, and Sebastián Vivas found the back of the net. Tormenta currently sits third in League One with a 2-2-1 (W-L-D) record.
Greenville Triumph comes into Sunday’s match following back-to-back losses to Charlotte Independence in league play and, most recently, Louisville City in the Open Cup. Greenville is currently first in League One with a 3-1-1 record.
Key Ingredients
South Georgia’s attack has been scoring with ease in its last three matches, scoring 11 goals during the stretch. Vivas and Pedro Fonseca have found their form entering April, with Vivas scoring in three straight matches and Fonseca tallying four goal contributions. The pair linked up twice during the last three games, with Fonseca providing the assists for Vivas’ goal against the Savannah Clovers and Miami.
Jake Dengler has also proven to be an attacking threat, specifically on set pieces for South Georgia. Dengler assisted the final goal against Lexington SC and scored the opener against Miami FC in the 12th minute.
Foe’s Formula
Head Coach Ian Cameron will look to slow down Greenville striker Lyam MacKinnon, who has five goals and two assists in all competitions this season. The 24-year-old has not provided a goal or assist in Greenville’s last two matches after getting subbed off in the 70th minute against Louisville City FC and at halftime against Charlotte, where he missed a penalty in the 13th minute.
The Peach States Derby Trophy Format
The team with the most points from the regular-season matches between the two teams will be awarded the Peach States Derby Trophy. Note that the trophy is based only on the regular season. Playoff, Open Cup, Jägermeister Cup, and exhibition matches are not included in the decision to award the trophy. If both teams are tied in points by the end of the season, the first tie-breaker will be the total goals scored in the series, and the second tie-breaker will be the away goals scored.
