STATESBORO, Ga. – June 19, 2024 – For the second time this season, South Georgia Tormenta FC’s W League emerged victorious against the Charlotte Eagles, finding a 2-1 score at home. A late goal cemented the victory for South Georgia.
Each team entered the match with unique displays of strength, both pushing to send the ball down the field to promote goal-scoring chances. South Georgia found the evening’s opening goal in the 17th minute when Smith Cathey sent a shot past the keeper into the bottom of the net, giving Tormenta the early lead.
The Charlotte Eagles found multiple opportunities in the first half but these shots went without conversion, following key clearances by Tormenta’s defense and skillful saves by keeper Jenna Moran.
Tormenta remained aggressive in its advances, making multiple attacking plays to seek out opportunities. South Georgia’s Carlyn Presley and Momo Nakao both took multiple first-half shots toward Charlotte’s keeper.
With the score stagnant at 1-0 entering the second half, the Ibises were intent on collecting a second goal to bolster the lead. The Charlotte Eagles’ backline remained strong, forcing South Georgia to fight to maintain possession. South Georgia’s defense preserved the lead with care, making integral plays to block Charlotte from finding goal-scoring opportunities.
As the second half progressed, the match became filled with transitional plays, as each team battled to make advancing plays.
In the 84th minute of play, Charlotte found a temporary equalizing goal. Three minutes later, Tormenta’s Alice Bussey was fouled in the penalty area, earning a penalty kick. Bussey stepped up to take the kick and converted the attempt, giving South Georgia back the lead. This goal was the last of the evening, signifying a Tormenta FC victory.
