Tormenta FC Academy Announces Recipients of JonPaul Gonzalez Scholarship

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC and The Ibis Foundation are pleased to announce that Grady Shiver, Audrey Jane Moryl, Tucker Brodnax and Yatzil Roldan are the 2023 recipients of the JonPaul Gonzalez Scholarship. In addition, the scholarship will fund new equipment to benefit the whole Academy. The annual scholarship was established by The Ibis Foundation in memory of the late TFC Academy player.

Coaches and Team Managers nominated players based on excellent training attendance and parents that are involved in helping their team and the club.

Shiver will compete with the Tormenta FC Academy 2007 Boys Ibis Statesboro team, Jane Moryl will compete with the Tormenta FC Academy 2010 Girls DPL team, Brodnax will compete in the 2005/06 Tormenta FC Academy Boys Ibis team and Roldan will feature for the Tormenta FC Academy 2012 Girls Ibis team.

JonPaul, a Bluffton, South Carolina native, passed away in a tragic car accident on Dec. 4, 2021. JP was a member of Tormenta FC Academy for a decade, and his family has been heavily involved with the club since its founding.

The Ibis Foundation continues to accept donations in memory of Gonzalez which will go towards funding player scholarships and equipment for the academy.

Tormenta FC, WJCL Set to Broadcast Saturday’s USL League One Match Against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC Live on MeTV

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC announced its upcoming match against Chattanooga Red Wolves SC will be broadcasted live on MeTV 22.2 this Saturday, July 15, at 7:30 p.m. ET from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium. Saturday’s match will see a rematch of last year’s 2022 USL League One Final, where Tormenta FC lifted its first-ever USL League One title from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium on Nov. 6, 2022.

South Georgia and Chattanooga faced off earlier this year in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the reigning League One champions secured a 2-0 victory on May 5, 2023.

WJCL is Savannah’s ABC-affiliated television station, serving southeastern Georgia’s Coastal Empire and southern South Carolina’s Lowcountry.

Tormenta FC to Host Pride Night on June 26

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced its upcoming Pride Night, set to take place on Monday, June 26, as Tormenta FC’s USL W League team takes on Southern Soccer Academy from Optim Sports Medicine Field at Tormenta Stadium at 7:30 p.m. ET.

A portion of the sales from these shirts will be donated to Boro Pride, a local non-profit organization, established in 2019, that is focused on community building. Scoring Goals for a Good Cause: Tormenta FC to Donate to Local Statesboro Food Bank

STATESBORO, Ga. — South Georgia Tormenta FC announced that beginning today the team has pledged to donate $100 to the local Statesboro food bank for every goal scored by Tormenta FC’s USL League One and USL W League during its home matches. Last Sunday’s USL W League fixture between Tormenta FC and North Alabama SC where Tormenta FC scored three goals will count toward the amount donated ($300).

Tormenta FC Raises Over $10,000 in Carter Payne Bowling Fundraiser

STATESBORO, Ga. – Today and every day, South Georgia Tormenta FC honors the life of Carter Payne, who tragically passed away in July 2022. On Monday, the club hosted the Carter Payne Memorial Bowling Fundraiser, raising over $10,000 for The Ibis Foundation’s Carter Payne Fund, which was created to help cover Tormenta FC Academy players’ team and uniform fees each year, starting with Tormenta FC’s 2023 Academy season.

The fundraiser, held on Monday, June 5, at The Clubhouse in Statesboro, Georgia, brought together the local Statesboro community and Tormenta FC’s USL League One and USL W League players alike in support of the cause.

The event saw over 100 participants feature in the fundraiser. Local businesses generously contributed raffle prizes, further bolstering the fundraising efforts.

Tormenta FC to Host Annual Carter Payne (CP2) Bowling Fundraiser on June 5th

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC in collaboration with The Ibis Foundation is set to host the Carter Payne Bowling Fundraiser at The Clubhouse from 4-7 p.m. ET on June 5th. The Carter Payne (CP2) Bowling Fundraiser will raise money for The Carter Payne Fund & Scholarship via the Ibis Foundation. The Carter Payne Scholarship helps cover Tormenta FC Academy player’s team and uniform fees each year, starting with Tormenta FC’s 2023 Academy season.

Tormenta FC player Carter David Payne passed away in 2022 and The Ibis Foundation created The Carter Payne Fund to honor his memory. This event will raise money for The Carter Payne Fund & Scholarship via the Ibis Foundation. The Ibis Foundation will be accepting donations. These donations will directly support youth in our community to help grow, enjoy, play, and learn about soccer without financial burden.

The bowling fundraiser will feature the brand new HyperBowling game that will level the playing field and make it fun, exciting and competitive for all to participate together. Bowling start times will begin at 4 p.m., 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. Teams of four will be paired with a USL League One or a USL W League player for the competition. Cumulative team scores will be tallied following the three waves of play and prizes will be awarded to the three highest scores.

The event will also feature a raffle ticket drawing with various prizes to be won from national and local businesses. Over $2500 worth of prizes have already been donated.

Tormenta FC Honors 2009 Ibis Boys, 2009 Magenta Girls Academy Teams at Peach States Derby

STATESBORO, Ga. — South Georgia Tormenta FC honored its 2009 Ibis Boys and 2009 Magenta Girls TFC Academy teams on Saturday night after both teams were crowned champions at the 2023 Tormenta FC Ibis Cup.

During halftime of the Peach States Derby, fans at Tormenta Stadium rose to their feet in appreciation of the young champions.

The ‘09 Magenta Girls fought hard and displayed great skill, securing a narrow 1-0 win in a tense final match against South Side Goal. The victory was all the more impressive given the tough opposition they faced throughout the tournament. The team was coached by Carson Shope, while Makayla Rockwood, Tristen Mays, America Garcia, Marisol Miller, Rylee Mackiewicz, Emma Hardy, Yoanna Mitchell, Emma Kate Tracy, and Mia Weathers all featured in the team’s cup run.

The ‘09 Ibis Boys also shined during the tournament, putting in a series of solid performances and ultimately claiming the Ibis Cup in emphatic fashion with a convincing 7-1 victory in the final against CESA. The team was coached by Bill Cheshire and Mike Smith, while Ben Lujan, Isaiah Puente, Jeremy Galvez, Isaac Burford, Mason Sellers, Michael Mitchell, Jaysin Milliken, Kevin Escobar, Ivoe Perigo, Elliott Smith, Hayden Scott and Fabricio Guerra all featured in the team’s historic cup run.

The Tormenta Way: Peer-to-Peer Recognition

STATESBORO, Ga. – For Tormenta FC Academy and Junior Academy Director Kian Brownlee, winning the United Soccer Alliance 2023 Showcase in late February represented much more than winning; it represented unity and inclusion to one of the team’s newest members.

Following the tournament’s conclusion, Marco Bolivar, who moved from New York a few months ago and currently plays for TFC ’14 Boys IBIS SC, was awarded the MVP trophy – a tradition started by Brownlee to recognize and celebrate the outstanding performance of a specific individual who has shown exceptional skill and sportsmanship on the field.

Brownlee says the team names an MVP following each tournament or event to not only recognize the entire team effort but also build a team culture centered around celebrating each other’s successes.

I know that this tradition will continue to inspire and motivate my players to strive for excellence both on and off the field because, at the end of the day, it’s not just about winning the game.”

What makes this tradition even more special is that the MVP gets to take the tournament title trophy home for a few days and share the joy with their family and friends. When they return the trophy to the team, they get to select the next player to take it home or nominate the “Player of the Night.”

This not only creates a sense of awareness and honesty in the feedback system but also allows all the kids to share the love and take pride in holding onto the trophy for a few days. It’s a small gesture, but it has a huge impact on the team’s morale and motivation.

Tormenta FC Announces 2023 Theme Nights

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC proudly presents eight theme nights for its 2023 USL League One season, creating engaging experiences for its supporters and appreciating different communities throughout South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

The club has created theme nights that engage with supporters and the surrounding community in fun and unique ways, like Paws & Claws Night, Kickin’ Into High Gear and Military Appreciation Night.

MARCH 25: HOME OPENER

Despite opening up the regular season on the road at North Carolina FC, South Georgia is set to open up its title-defending season at home against the Charlotte Independence, and fans will have an opportunity to take pictures with the League One trophy. After a long offseason, fans return to Tormenta Stadium to see their favorite players take the field again, ready to defend their title and continue their winning ways. The atmosphere will be electric, as South Georgia looks to kick off its regular season in front of a packed stadium of passionate fans.

MAY 27: MILITARY APPRECIATION NIGHT

Tormenta FC will host Military Appreciation Night on May 27 against the Richmond Kickers. All active or retired military members will receive a 50% off discount on General Admission tickets with proof of valid military identification at the ticketing tent the day of the game.

On June 19, Tormenta FC will proudly host its third annual Juneteenth Night in partnership with local Black organizations, with more activities and promotions to be announced closer to the date.

Juneteenth is an American holiday often referred to as a ‘second Independence Day’ that celebrates the legal end of slavery in the United States and brings light to the fact that despite the Emancipation Proclamation, slavery did not fully end until months or years later in some states.

June 10: HEALTH & WELLNESS NIGHT

Health & Wellness Night provides an opportunity for fans to learn more about local organizations and businesses in our community.

During Halftime, Tormenta FC will host The “Battle of the Gyms,” where the majority of Statesboro’s local gyms will feature in a tug-of-war battle.

JULY 22: KICKIN’ INTO HIGH GEAR

Tormenta FC will be hosting a TFC Car Show at The Clubhouse in Statesboro, Georgia, which will take place from 12-4 p.m. ET and arrival starting at 11 a.m. ET. Award categories will be disclosed closer to the event, and these awards will be given out during halftime of the match (roughly 8:30 p.m. ET) inside Tormenta Stadium.

Additionally, the Car Smash event will also take place on July 22 in the Tormenta Stadium parking lot. Tormenta FC fans will bring fear to all of Greenville after they are done destroying a green painted car provided by Complete Car Care Service Inc.

AUGUST 19: PAWS & CLAWS NIGHT

Pets, White Claws and soccer at Tormenta Stadium! August 19 will be one of the most exciting nights of the season with pets allowed at Tormenta Stadium as Tormenta FC plays Forward Madison. The club will also offer a special deal on White Claws that night.
