Tormenta FC Adds Midfielder Gabriel Cabral on Two-Year Deal

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC and Brazilian midfielder Gabriel Cabral have agreed to a two-year contract with an option for 2024, pending league and federation approval. The former Tormenta FC 2 captain signs his first professional contract after impressing on and off the pitch with the club’s USL League Two side in 2021.

“Gabriel is a player that our USL League Two coaches were privileged to work with every day, and whom I also wanted to get the opportunity to work with,” Tormenta FC Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “He embodies all the human qualities that you want to see in a player, and that transmits to a very intelligent athlete on the field.

“The modern game necessitates midfielders who are full of action both with and against the ball. That’s Cabral. He’s locked in at all times, and we can’t wait for him to continue to represent our club in the next few years.” 

Cabral captained TFC 2 to a winning 10-3-1 season, helping the team to its third USL League Two playoff run. The Brazilian midfielder played 10 matches and contributed three goals and three assists, often stunning the crowd with his incredible strikes from afar. Cabral also earned himself a place on the 2021 League Two Team of the Year.

Before his arrival with Tormenta FC 2, Cabral spent three years with the University of Charleston West Virginia, before ending his collegiate career at UNC Wilmington. Cabral has earned numerous collegiate honors including leading Charleston to its historic first NCAA DII National Championship.

“I am super appreciative of Tormenta FC for giving me the opportunity to sign my first professional contract,” Cabral commented. “Throughout my time with TFC 2, everyone made me feel welcomed, the fans were impeccable, and the Tormenta FC project is just getting started.

TFC Academy Teams Gain National Experience at MLS NEXT Fest

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC Academy’s U16 & U19 MLS NEXT teams traveled to Norco, California, to participate in the inaugural MLS NEXT Fest. The teams gained invaluable experience competing with the nation’s top youth academies and were seen by collegiate and professional scouts.

Proving themselves on a national level, the Tormenta FC U19 team went undefeated with three draws in three games. The team recorded one clean sheet, four goals scored and four goals conceded. TFC U19 finished the weekend in third place for their group.

Elise Holcey named WSAV Athlete of the Week

STATESBORO, Ga. – Tormenta FC’s first USL W League signing, Elise Holcey, was named the Athlete of the Week by WSAV News on Wednesday. The feature showcases Holcey as she continues to elevate the bar for future generations of women athletes in South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina.

The 17-year-old TFC Academy talent was announced in November as the first player in the new USL W League.

WSAV News first introduced its Athlete of the Week segment in Jan. 2021.

“Sports Director Andrew Goldstein brought the idea to shine a light on athletes that may not get the spotlight that a lot of our area football players do in the fall,” WSAV Sports Reporter/Anchor Connor Delprete said. “The plan is to make it a year-round segment and continue to highlight our area athletes for the great things they do on and off the field.”

The Savannah native joined TFC Academy in 2019, and coaches quickly noticed her potential and commitment to make herself and those around her better every day. This season, Holcey was named captain of the 2003/04 Girls Ibis team while playing up a year in age. She led her team to a second-place finish in the National League Piedmont Conference. Holcey also earned a spot on Tormenta FC’s USL Academy Girls roster and competed in the 2021 USL Academy Cup in Tampa, Florida.

In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named one of eight founding members of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. For two decades between 1995 and 2015, the W League saw some of the biggest names past and present in the sport compete on the field, and this new era will build on the legacy of its predecessor. In alignment with the USL League Two season, the W League will kick off in May and end with the W League Playoffs and W League Final in late July.

Tormenta Women will host its first open trial on Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Tormenta FC Training Grounds at The Clubhouse in Statesboro, Georgia (REGISTER HERE). Tormenta FC and Ibis Foundation announce JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez Scholarship

Statesboro, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC and the Ibis Foundation have announced the formation of the JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez Scholarship, established in memory of JonPaul (JP) Gonzalez, a former Tormenta FC Academy player.

JonPaul, a Bluffton, South Carolina native, passed away in a tragic car accident on December 4, 2021. JP was a member of the Tormenta FC Academy for a decade, and his family has been heavily involved with the club since its founding.

“JonPaul loved the game of soccer and playing for his club, Tormenta FC,” Christina Galbreath-Gonzalez, mother of JonPaul states. “In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to The JonPaul Gonzalez Scholarship Fund to give the opportunity for a child to play the game JP loved so much.”

The Ibis Foundation will accept donations in memory of JP which will go towards funding one chosen TFC Academy player’s team and uniform fees each year, starting with TFC Academy’s 2022 season.

“We are absolutely heartbroken for JP and his family,” Tormenta FC Academy Vice President Brad Nein said. “A great friend, leader, and soccer player; JP stood for all that is good in growing up in an amazing family that is committed to each other’s successes. We loved having JP as a member of the Tormenta Family and will forever cherish the warm memories we all made together on and off the soccer field. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones, as well as everyone who’s been impacted by this tragic loss.” 

Tormenta FC Academy and The Ibis Foundation work together to promote the sport of soccer throughout South Georgia and the Low Country by providing resources and training opportunities to local youth at a significantly lower cost.

Shafer Gottlieb Competes in MLS NEXT Best of U16 Showcase

STATESBORO, Ga. – Tormenta FC Academy’s Shafer Gottlieb was invited to compete with the nation’s top U16 stars on Saturday evening in the MLS NEXT Fest Best of U16 Showcase in Norco, California.

TFC Academy’s 2003/04 and 2006 MLS Next Boys teams are currently competing in the inaugural MLS NEXT Fest through Tuesday, Dec. 7. The five-day event features over 300 of the top youth teams across the United States and Canada.

“I couldn’t be more proud and excited for Shafer to be given this opportunity,” TFC Academy’s U14/U16 MLS NEXT Head Coach Jay Peake commented. “This is a reward for the growth he has shown both on and off the field. This selection is not only a testament to Shafer, but to the club as a whole. Since joining MLS NEXT, I believe we have shown that we can compete against the biggest clubs in the country.

This selection shows that there are opportunities at Tormenta FC to compete at the very highest level of youth soccer in the U.S. and should excite and inspire our other players to continue trusting the process.”

During the match, Gottlieb held down the back line for the entirety of the first half, helping his squad keep a clean sheet through the first 45 minutes. The 15-year-old defender was coached by former professionals and MLS legends, also gaining exposure with U.S. National Team scouts in attendance at the showcase.

“I’m thrilled to be given this huge opportunity,” Gottlieb said. “I thank my family and teammates, along with my coaches and the entire Tormenta family for their support. It was an amazing experience. We kept a clean sheet the first half, which I was honored to play in full. And a special thank you to all our supporters who came and cheered me on.”

“Our job in the offseason is to build a team of characters that our club and community are proud to call their own,” Head Coach Ian Cameron said. “This is the cornerstone to the club making playoffs and competing for championships. We want to be the most prepared and the most united team in the league.”

Tormenta FC Announces Initial 2022 Roster Decisions

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced its initial roster decisions ahead of the 2022 USL League One season, its fourth in the professional league.

Goalkeeper Pablo Jara, defender Stefan Mueller, midfielder Marco Micaletto and forward Rodney Michael are all under contract for the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Tormenta FC has exercised the 2022 club options for defender Curtis Thorn and midfielder Adrian Billhardt, pending league and federation approval.

The six returning players were crucial to Tormenta FC’s 2021 season. Micaletto played in 28 games and was the team’s top scorer with 11 goals. The Italian veteran earned five appearances on USL League One Team of the Week and was also named to the 2021 All-League First Team. Alongside Micaletto, Thorn appeared twice on the USL League One Team of the Week, and Mueller and Jara made one appearance.

The returning core group played the majority of last season’s fixtures with an average of 1,533 minutes. STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC has announced its initial roster decisions ahead of the 2022 USL League One season, its fourth in the professional league.

Goalkeeper Pablo Jara, defender Stefan Mueller, midfielder Marco Micaletto and forward Rodney Michael are all under contract for the 2022 season. Meanwhile, Tormenta FC has exercised the 2022 club options for defender Curtis Thorn and midfielder Adrian Billhardt, pending league and federation approval.

The six returning players were crucial to Tormenta FC’s 2021 season. Micaletto played in 28 games and was the team’s top scorer with 11 goals. The Italian veteran earned five appearances on USL League One Team of the Week and was also named to the 2021 All-League First Team. Alongside Micaletto, Thorn appeared twice on the USL League One Team of the Week, and Mueller and Jara made one appearance.

The returning core group played the majority of last season’s fixtures with an average of 1,533 minutes. Get To Know: Elise Holcey

Elise grew up on her grandmother’s farm in Zanesville, Ohio, approximately an hour east of Columbus. She lived there until she was 9, then her family moved down south to Savannah, Georgia.

The forward began her playing career later than most, joining her local YMCA recreation team at age 9. On her 9th birthday, Elise scored her first goal and has been hooked on soccer ever since. Due to her high level of talent, people are often surprised to hear that she has only been playing for eight years.

Elise is a current senior at Savannah Arts Academy, where she is passionate about learning fine arts. She most enjoys portraits and realism while using acrylic paint, charcoal and graphite as her main methods.

Elise’s passion for soccer was ignited at a young age by watching the US Women’s National Team whenever she had the chance. Her favorite player to watch is USWNT legend, Abby Wambach. Holcey says that she also tries to match her playstyle to that of another USMNT great, Carli Lloyd.

Elise joined Tormenta FC Academy in 2019 and quickly rose to the top, being named captain of her 2003/04 Girls Ibis team this season, all while playing in a higher age bracket.

Elise is also a Tormenta Futures Coach where she inspires and leads 7 to 10-year-olds in fundamentals of soccer and relevant life lessons.

With aspirations to play professionally with the USWNT someday, Elise looks forward to honing her skills and learning from her teammates at Tormenta Women. The 17-year-old forward is excited for the growth of the women’s game in South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina and cant wait to get started in May 2022.

Path to Pro: Tormenta Women Adds Elise Holcey as First W League Player

STATESBORO, Ga. – South Georgia Tormenta FC is thrilled to announce TFC Academy forward Elise Holcey as the first player for the club’s new USL W League team, pending league and federation approval. At 17 years old, Holcey has made national history as the inaugural signing across the entire USL W League in its new era, kicking off in May 2022.

Since its founding in 2015, Tormenta FC has led the way for the growth of soccer in South Georgia and the Lowcountry of South Carolina and continues this tradition today, as it extends its pathway to the professional level for young women across the region.

“I have been thoroughly impressed with Elise, both on and off the field since we started working together this past August,” Tormenta Women Head Coach Jim Robbins commented. “On the field, she possesses all the soccer abilities needed to be successful in the USL W League. She has a unique attacking skill set that we can continue to develop and showcase here at Tormenta FC this summer and for the next few years of her career.

“Away from the field, Elise embodies everything that Tormenta FC is known for. She truly defines what it means to be an athlete of good character and a positive ambassador of the game.”

The young striker joined TFC Academy in 2019 and quickly excelled to the top of the girl’s program, where she was named captain of the 2003/04 Girls Ibis team while playing up a year in age. This season, Holcey led her team to a second-place finish in the National League Piedmont Conference. Holcey also earned a spot on Tormenta FC’s USL Academy Girls roster and competed in the 2021 USL Academy Cup in Tampa, Florida.

Holcey has not yet committed to playing college soccer but has dreams of playing on the United States Women’s National Team and believes the USL W League is her next step on the way to this goal.

Off the pitch, Holcey attends Savannah Arts Academy (Class of 2022) and is a Tormenta Futures coach, mentoring children ages two to 10 in soccer and life lessons.

“What a tremendous delight to have Elise Holcey as our first Tormenta FC player in the USL W League,” Tormenta FC Co-Owner Netra R. Van Tassell said. “Elise is a wonderful young woman, who is positive and upbeat as well as hard-working and tenacious. She has a vision and goals for herself, and we are elated that our newest team will be able to provide her the platform to continue to grow and experience the beautiful game of soccer.”

Tormenta Women team will play its matches on Optim Health System Field at the club’s new state-of-the-art stadium in Statesboro, which will also serve as the home to the professional USL League One team, the pre-professional USL League Two squad and Georgia Southern University Men’s and Women’s NCAA Division I soccer teams.

In June of 2021, Tormenta FC was named one of eight founding members of the USL W League, an elite pre-professional pathway for women looking to build their careers both on and off the pitch. For two decades between 1995 and 2015, the W League saw some of the biggest names past and present in the sport compete on the field, and this new era will build on the legacy of its predecessor. In alignment with the USL League Two season, the W League will kick off in May and end with the W League Playoffs and W League Final in late July.
